Organic, Biodynamic Wine List from Southern Wine & Spirits of California

Southern, American and Pacific Wines & Spirits represent a wide range of wines that are produced using organic, biodynamic and green farming practices. We have narrowed down the different designations, official and otherwise, to make it easy for everyone to understand how the wines are classified on our Organic, Biodynamic Wine List.

“Certified Organic” means a wine meets one of the designations of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (U.S.D.A.) rules for organic certification. This includes imported wines, since these wines cannot be labeled “Organic” here in the U.S. unless they meet the government standards.

Here is the link for the government certifications: http://www.ams.usda.gov/AMSv1.0/getfile?dDocName=STELPRDC5077433&acct=nopgeninfo

Organic” refers to a winery that uses organic farmingbut is not certified organic. These wineries can use 100% organic practices, but when they add sulfites to stabilize the wine, the product cannot be certified organic.

“Certified Biodynamic” wines are certified by one of two private organizations; Demeter international or Syndicate International des Vignerons. These organizations have strict guidelines that the growers must adhere to earn certification.

“Biodynamic” indicates that the winery is practicing biodynamic practices to some degree that is not certified.

NOTE: Biodynamic farming requires that no chemicals can be used to produce the grapes. Sulfites are allowed since they are natural.

The Organic, Biodynamic Wine List also includes a category for “Green Practices”, which indicates that the wineries go the extra mile to make less of an impact on the earth by utilizing solar power and recycled packaging material, etc. in the production of their wines. They also recycle water.

NOTE: Sustainable farming is not used on this list because most wineries practice sustainable farming.

Carl,
FYI  all Paul Dolan Mendocino wines are certified organic.
To my knowledge the Chilean wines from Natura and Nativa carry the organic certification too.

Dear SWSPriceBook.com Readers: Several of you have contacted us about not being able to download the Organic and Biodynamic Wine Lists. To solve the problem, I have eliminated the two previous formats and have made available PDFs of Carl Corsi's entire list.

Thanks for your valuable feedback. I very much appreciate it.
